A flat spot on a roller can turn a smooth tumble into a steady knock, while a bunched or torn seal can let the drum drag and thump against the cabinet. Neither can be pinned down by ear alone; the cadence simply tells us where to look first. On a visit we spin the drum by hand, feel for a wheel that no longer rolls freely, and run a finger around the seal for high spots. If the beat quickens with the drum, the rollers move to the top of the list; if it holds steady regardless of speed, the seal and drum glides get the closer look.

Whines and squeals that climb with the spin

A squeal is a different animal. A high note that rises as the dryer gets going, or a constant whine under the tumble, often comes from the idler pulley, the spring-loaded wheel that keeps the belt tight, or from a bearing that has run dry. The idler spins fast, its little bearing can wear, and once the grease is gone it protests loudly. A rear drum bearing or the motor’s own bearing can complain for the same reason. Because these parts sit under load, a squeal that seems minor can still mean a component is on its way out, and a pulley that binds may eventually chew through a belt. We check the idler for wobble and grit, roll the belt off to listen to the motor on its own, and feel the rear support for roughness. Sorting out a dry bearing while it still turns is usually tidier than waiting until it locks up part way through a load.

Grinds, scrapes, and the smell that means stop

Grinding sits at the serious end of the scale. A gritty, metallic scrape, especially one coming from low down or behind the machine, can point to the blower wheel, the fan that pushes air through the drum and out to the vent. A stray sock, a hairpin or a coin that slips past the lint screen can land in the blower housing and clatter against the fan, or the wheel itself can crack and drag. That same air path drives your drying times, so a grind there earns a prompt look. One rule overrides everything above: if any noise arrives together with a hot or burning odour, stop the dryer and pull the plug. Friction from a seized bearing or a belt slipping on a stalled drum can build real heat, and running it further is not worth the gamble. That pairing needs a hands-on diagnosis, not one more cycle.
