Dryer Drum Not Turning? What to Check Safely

Observe without opening the cabinet

Confirm the door closes and the controls accept a cycle. If the motor hums, the drum stays still or a hot smell appears, stop trying to start it. Do not remove panels or reach inside the drum path while power is connected.

Drive parts need individual testing

A broken belt is common, but worn rollers, a seized idler, a door switch or the motor can create similar symptoms. Diagnosis checks whether the drum turns freely and which drive component stopped the sequence.

Book before heat causes more damage

Arrange service when the drum never moves, starts only intermittently or stops with scraping or burning odour. Share the model number and whether you hear the motor.

Good To Know

Dryer Drum Not Turning? What to Check Safely — quick answers

Can I use a dryer that heats but does not tumble?

No. Stop it because heat without normal drum movement can damage clothing and create unsafe temperatures.

Does a loose drum mean the belt broke?

A broken belt is possible, but the drum feel alone cannot confirm the failed part.

Why does the dryer hum when I press start?

The motor may be unable to turn the drum because of a drive or motor fault and should not be repeatedly energized.
