Bake or broil — which mode fails narrows it fast

The single most useful thing to notice before we arrive is which heating mode is dead. An electric oven has two elements: the bake element hidden along the floor of the cavity and the broil element across the top. If bake leaves the oven cold but broil still browns a tray, the fault likely sits with the bake element or the control contact that feeds it. The reverse pattern points the other way. When both are stone cold, the trouble tends to live further upstream — a shared relay, a safety device, or the supply into the oven circuit. An element can lie about its condition

Bake and broil elements fail in two ways. Sometimes the metal sheath develops a visible wound — a blistered bulge, a split, or a burned-through gap where it finally let go. That kind of damage often explains a total heat loss and is easy to spot once the oven is open. Other times the element looks flawless and has quietly gone open inside, giving no heat and no clue to the eye. Because both are possible, a clean-looking element is not proof it is fine, and a scorched one is not the whole story either: a damaged element can be a symptom of a wiring or connection problem that would simply cook the next part too. A lit display proves less than you’d think

Plenty of no-heat calls start with the same reasonable assumption — the clock, timer and buttons all light up, so the oven “has power.” What that really confirms is that the control board is alive. The heating side is a separate path: the bake relay on the control switches power to the elements, and a safety cut-off sits in line to interrupt the circuit if temperatures ever run away. A stuck relay contact or a tripped cut-off can leave every light glowing while not a watt reaches the elements. So a bright panel is a starting point, not a diagnosis, and the relay and cut-off get traced on their own.

What the on-site visit actually measures

For a no-heat electric oven, the technician works the heating circuit end to end: the bake and broil elements individually, the relay contacts on the control that switch them, the safety cut-off, and the connections and wiring that tie them together. It helps if you can tell us the model number, whether bake, broil or both are affected, whether the oven ever reached temperature before quitting, and whether any error code showed on the panel.
