Where the water shows up tells us a great deal. Water that appears further back, or that spreads out from beneath the middle of the cabinet, usually did not come from the door at all; it can travel along the base from a hose clamp, a pump seal or the sump gasket and only surface where the floor happens to slope. Before a visit, wipe the area dry, run a short cycle if it is safe to do so, and note the first place the water returns. That one detail helps separate a door-edge leak from base-travel water and makes the diagnosis quicker.

When the tub stays dry: tracing a no-fill

A no-fill is the mirror-image complaint and follows its own path. If the cycle begins and you hear a click but the tub stays dry, the water inlet valve, its fine inlet screen and the household supply line are all worth examining - a valve that will not open, a screen packed with mineral grit, or a supply stop left closed can each keep water out. None of these is assumed on its own; fill timing, valve operation and supply pressure are checked together so the real blocker is confirmed rather than guessed at, and only then is a part suggested.

Overfills and the float that sets the level

“Will not fill” and “overfills” sit at opposite ends of the same system, and it pays not to confuse them. When a dishwasher keeps taking on water, runs unusually long, or leaves the tub too full, the float switch meant to cap the level may not be signalling as it should. The float itself, the microswitch beneath it and the controls that read it can all be examined; a float held up by residue or a switch that no longer trips is one possible reason an overfill ends up as water on the floor. It is worth mentioning whether the overflow appears at the start of a cycle or near the end, since that timing helps narrow whether fill control or drainage is the more likely culprit.

Access matters in condo and townhome kitchens
