Washer Smells Musty? Clean Safely and Find the Cause
Clean only as the manual directs
Remove laundry promptly, wipe accessible door-gasket folds and dispenser surfaces, and run the manufacturer’s designated cleaning cycle with an approved product. Never combine cleaners or reach behind the gasket with sharp tools. Keep the door ajar between loads only where children and pets cannot access it.
When odour points to a fault
Persistent smell can come from residue behind a damaged door boot, slow drainage, a fouled filter or water that remains where it should not. Look for standing water, visible gasket damage or a drain complaint. Masking the smell with fragrance does not correct the source.
Prevent the smell from returning
Use the correct detergent type and amount, avoid routine overloading and let accessible surfaces dry. Book diagnosis if cleaning does not help, the gasket leaks or water remains after a cycle.

Washer Smells Musty? Clean Safely and Find the Cause — quick answers
Why do front-load washers smell musty?
Moisture and residue often remain in the folds of the door boot and detergent dispenser when they cannot dry fully.
Can I mix cleaning products in the washer?
No. Never mix bleach, vinegar, ammonia or other cleaners. Follow only the appliance manual and product label.
Will leaving the door open help?
Leaving it slightly ajar when safe can improve drying, but it will not repair a leaking gasket or drainage fault.
