Fridge Not Cooling? Safe Checks Before You Book Repair
A refrigerator that hums, lights up or appears normal can still fail to hold a safe cold temperature. The compressor, air circulation, controls and door seals all affect the result, so a warm compartment does not identify one failed part. Start with checks that do not require opening panels or handling electrical connections. They can help protect food and give a technician a clear description of what changed.
Check settings, doors and airflow first
Confirm that the refrigerator has not been set to a warmer temperature or a vacation-style mode. A recent power interruption, cleaning or accidental button press can change a setting without an obvious warning. Give the appliance time after a deliberate setting adjustment, but do not use repeated setting changes as a way to force cooling.
Make sure containers and packages are not blocking interior vents. Cold air needs a path through the compartments; tightly packed food against vents can create warm areas even when other zones feel cool. Check that the door closes fully and that a package, drawer or damaged gasket is not holding it open. Wipe an accessible gasket clean, but do not pull on or remove it to troubleshoot.
If the unit is unusually warm at the front or sides, that detail is useful to record. Normal operating warmth can vary, but a burning smell, smoke, repeated breaker trip or sharp electrical odour is not a normal test condition. Stop use, avoid touching internal parts, and arrange safe service rather than continuing to run the appliance.
Note the exact cooling pattern
Look at both compartments and write down what you find. Is the freezer still cold while fresh food is warm? Is only one shelf affected? Did the problem begin after a power outage, a move, a door being left ajar or a gradual change in performance? A display code, repeated clicking, new vibration or a fan sound that comes and goes can also help narrow the diagnosis.
Avoid opening the doors repeatedly to check progress. Each opening lets warm air in and makes the appliance work harder. If food safety is a concern, move perishables to another reliable cold location according to applicable guidance. Do not rely on a refrigerator that feels merely cool when it is no longer maintaining normal temperatures.
What a residential electric refrigerator diagnosis can cover
We assess accessible electrical, control, fan, airflow and door-related conditions based on the symptom. The goal is to determine whether a practical residential electric repair is appropriate, not to replace parts based on a single noise or temperature reading. Have the model number available and mention whether the appliance is built-in, tightly enclosed, recently moved or connected to a water line.
Sealed-system, compressor and refrigerant work is outside our scope. Do not pierce tubing, use sealants, add refrigerant or disassemble the rear of the appliance. Those actions can create safety issues and make the original fault harder to assess.
Before an appointment, clear enough space for safe access and remove loose items that could fall when the doors are opened. The $89 diagnostic is waived with repair; most repairs are $150-$350, and new customers receive $40 off any repair. Book service when basic safe checks do not restore normal cooling or when the refrigerator shows warning signs.

Fridge Not Cooling? Safe Checks Before You Book Repair — quick answers
Why is my refrigerator running but not cold?
Cooling performance can be affected by settings, airflow, fans, controls or other components, so the symptom needs diagnosis rather than a guess.
What should I do with food if my fridge is warm?
Follow food-safety guidance, move perishable food to a reliable cold location when needed, and avoid repeatedly opening the refrigerator door.
Can I repair a refrigerator compressor myself?
No. Sealed-system, compressor and refrigerant work is outside our scope and should not be attempted as a homeowner repair.
What does refrigerator repair cost?
The $89 diagnostic is waived with repair; most repairs are $150-$350, and new customers receive $40 off any repair.
