Electric Dryer Won't Start? Safe Checks Before Repair

A dryer that will not start may have a supply, door-switch, thermal-protection, start-switch or control fault. External checks can rule out simple causes without opening a high-voltage appliance.

Electric Dryer Won't Start? Safe Checks Before Repair

Confirm the external conditions

Close the door firmly, select a timed cycle and check that control lock or delayed start is off. Inspect the household breaker without bypassing it or using an extension cord. An electric dryer uses high voltage, so internal testing belongs to a qualified technician.

Common no-start components

The door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, belt switch, motor and electronic control can each interrupt the start circuit. A completely silent dryer differs from one that clicks or hums, so record the behaviour.

Stop after one safe reset

If the breaker trips again, the dryer smells hot or the controls flicker, keep it off. Book diagnosis with the model number and explain what happened before it stopped.
