Why Is My Dishwasher Not Draining?
A dishwasher that leaves water after a cycle can have a drainage, filter, pump, hose, latch or control concern. A safe diagnosis identifies the actual cause before parts are replaced.

Why Is My Dishwasher Not Draining?
Water remaining in the bottom of a dishwasher after a cycle is frustrating, especially when dishes are still inside. The water may be a small amount left around the filter area, or it may be enough to cover the bottom of the tub. The timing matters: a machine that washes normally and stops before the final drain can need a different inspection from one that hums, shows an error, or never starts the cycle.
Common reasons a dishwasher may not drain
The drain filter and drain path are practical places to begin because food debris or a small object can affect water flow. A drain pump may be unable to move water, a hose may have an obstruction or routing issue, and a control or sensor concern can interrupt the point where the machine should drain. A door latch issue can also prevent a dishwasher from progressing through its cycle. These possibilities overlap, which is why a sound from the bottom of the tub does not by itself identify the failed part.
If the dishwasher is built in, do not pull it out or disconnect plumbing just to investigate. Note the model, whether the machine completes washing, when water is first visible, and whether a display message appears. If a kitchen sink or nearby drain is also behaving unusually, mention that detail when booking because it can help explain the conditions around the appliance.
Practical steps before booking
Remove dishes carefully and wipe up any water that has reached the floor. Check the user-accessible filter only in the way the appliance manual describes, and do not force parts that will not move normally. Avoid adding chemical drain products to the dishwasher; they can create another hazard and do not confirm the appliance fault. If the dishwasher smells hot, trips a breaker, leaks actively, or has damaged wiring, stop using it and arrange service.
A diagnosis can assess the applicable filter area, pump, drain path, latch and accessible electrical controls. The repair recommendation comes after that inspection, so you can decide based on the actual cause and price rather than a guess.
Start with safety and the visible symptom
Before inspecting an appliance, stop the cycle or turn it off if there is water on the floor, a hot smell, smoke, damaged wiring or a breaker that repeatedly trips. Do not remove panels or touch electrical connections while the appliance is energized. A useful note for a repair visit is what the appliance does, when the problem begins, whether an error code appears, and whether the symptom changes between cycles. This helps narrow the first inspection without treating a symptom as proof of one failed part.
What an on-site diagnosis looks for
A proper residential electric appliance diagnosis checks the parts that apply to the actual symptom and the appliance model. The technician may inspect accessible filters, switches, latches, sensors, heating components, controls, seals or mechanical parts, then explain which condition is supported by the testing. This is more useful than replacing a likely part from a short online description. Keep a clear path to the appliance and mention if it is built in, hardwired, stacked, or located in a condo with check-in or parking requirements.
Pricing and service boundaries
The diagnostic is $89 and is waived when you proceed with repair. Most repairs are $150–$350 once the fault and any required part are known, and new customers receive $40 off any repair. Riko works on residential electric appliances only. Gas appliances, gas connections, commercial and restaurant equipment are outside our scope. Dishwasher installation is the one installation service we offer; the guidance here is for repair diagnosis.

Why Is My Dishwasher Not Draining? — quick answers
Can I run the dishwasher again if water remains inside?
Avoid repeated cycles until the cause is checked. If water is on the floor, stop use and keep children and pets away from the area.
Can a clogged filter cause a draining problem?
A filter or drain path can contribute, but a pump, hose, control or another component can produce similar symptoms.
Do you repair built-in dishwashers?
Yes. We diagnose and repair residential dishwashers where access can be arranged.
Do you repair commercial dishwashers?
No. Riko services residential electric appliances only.
